Core Skylanders
Core Skylanders are just the basic Skylanders figures. These are the figures that we refer to as Series 1, Series 2, Series 3, and Series 4 figures.
In Spyro’s Adventure all 32 original figures were Core Skylanders. All 32 figures are also considered Series 1, but that differentiation was not made until the second game was released and Series 2 figures were created.
In Skylanders Giants, eight new Series 1 figures were created along with 24 Series 2 figures.
What makes a figure Series 2?
In order to be a Series 2 figure, the character must have appeared in a previous game. When the figure is reproduced and reposed for a second game, the second figure is a Series 2 figure.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, 16 new Series 1 figures were created along with 16 reposed (Series 2 and 3) figures.
What makes a figure Series 3?
In order to be a Series 3 figure, the character must have an original Series 1 figure as well as a reposed Series 2 figure. Then the third figure (the second repose) is considered a Series 3 figure.
In Skylanders Trap Team, 18 new Series 1 figures were created along with five reposed (Series 2, 3, and 4) figures.
What makes a figure Series 4?
In order to be a Series 4 figure, the character must have an original Series 1 figure as well as a reposed Series 2 figure, and a second reposed Series 3 figure. Then the fourth figure (the third repose) is considered a Series 4 figure.
While all the definitions above might seem a bit confusing I hope this chart below will help sort things out.

So basically the Series number is a count of how many reposes a figure has. This does not include LightCores, Minis, or other variants as they are not Core Skylanders.
Skylanders SuperChargers
In the fifth game, Skylanders SuperChargers, the Series numbers were abandoned.
Although there were recurring characters, they were completely overhauled. These characters got a new look, a new set of moves, and new upgrades. Because of these changes they no longer carry over the Series numbering.
